Night Ski touring on Seymour

Text and pictures by Richard So

After two weekends without skiing, I needed some exercise. And when it snows in Vancouver, that probably means the snow is pretty good in the North Shore mountains. I tried to convince the mountain goat to go come along, but only the German engineer was keen. I wasn't going to write a TR, but Seppel suggested that I should since this might be his only trip with a VOC member this year, and wants to let everybody know that he didn't get buried in an avalanche.

This picture was taken with Seppel's incredibly bright headlight shining on him. When he first turned it on, I thought the moon came out. It's one of those fancy lights for mountain biking at night.

We forgot that it was Guys night out aka girls ski free night at Seymour, and the parking lot was overflowing. Luckily we found a spot next to some guys who were playing loud rap music, so we could put our boots on with some entertainment. It was a total whiteout skiing most of the way up to the First Pump, but then it cleared up, just as forecasted. We didn't linger long, just enough time for tea and to watch the clouds clear.

With the strong northwest winds, it didn't take long.

Skiing down from the First Pump was probably as good as the North Shore mountains get. It's pretty nice place we live in where you can get first tracks on a Monday night. We found some nice steeper trees, making for some enjoyable skiing. It was about 20cm of somewhat heavy storm snow, on top of a solid ice crust. We skied out the groomers, and nobody stopped us, but probably because everybody was gone.

Next time, maybe with a full moon. Sorry about the grainy images, there just wasn't any moonlight this evening.

Thanks Richard for the pics and the TR.
